Possible
Cause Of Chatter Problem
-
Lack of rigidity in set up of machine.
- Excessive
clearance on blades.
- Insufficient
reaming stock.
- Too
little back taper on blades.
- Dull
cutting blades.
-
Improver speed to feed ratio.
|
Solutions
-
Check holding of part, loose slides or machine gibs.
-
Reduce clearance angle on blades by grinding 3o to 5 o primary.
-
Increase reaming stock allowance.
-
Increase back taper.
-
Regrind or replace blades.
-
Alter the speed to the feed, changing one or both to find best
ratio.

Finish Control
Problems
|
Solutions
|
|
-
Rough finish, tearing or guaged hole threadlike finish.
|
-
Increase top rake of blades.
-
Decrease feeds.
-
Break sharp edge of chamfer by horning with slight radius.
-
Insufficient coolant supply or wrong coolant.
- Grind
shave angle 3 degree x 1mm long behind chamfer angle.

|
Causes Of Size
Control Problem
|
Solution
|
|
-
Misalignment beyond float limit of reamer.
-
Cutter blades not floating or locked solid.
-
Chamfer not alike on blades or blades or blades not ground correctly.
Cut is not properly balanced.
-
Part picking up heat.
-
Picking on blades (built up edge)
-
Lock ring not tight. Blades expand and cut oversize.
-
Worn ways or slides or machine.
|
-
Indicate reamers or holders and spindle for permissible
run-out.
-
Check blades for burrs or chips. Grind 0.05 mm. back edge of
blade to ensure end cap not locking blades.
-
Regrind or replace blades.
-
Use sufficient and proper coolant. Reduce speed.
-
Improve grind finish or blades. Increase top rake, Remove sharp
edges by light honing on cutting edge.
-
Tighten up the lock ring.
-
Install reamer in position of greatest error of machine IMPORTANT.
Error must be within float limit of reamer. Realign holders
to true position.

Short Life Of
Blades
|
Solutions
|
|
-
Too great speed.
- Material
too hard or hard spots.
-
Improper lubrication.
-
Tool geometry.
-
Cutting blade material.
|
-
Check for proper blade material (High Speed or Carbide).
-
Check material and hardness.
-
Check coolant, applicant, and coolant type.
-
Check grinding of blades.
-
Proper grade of carbide.
